Supported by an optical arrangement of mirrors and lenses the laser beam in red or green can be formed to a line but also to other patterns by diffraction or refraction. Since the laser beam thereby represents nothing more than an “extended source” (laser standard EN 60825-1), a line laser can still be classified in laser classes one or two even with a higher optical power.
Depending on the design of the line laser, the respective length of the line can be determined, for example, by the angle of its positioning. In this case, the length is also determined by the radiation power, just like the range in the distance. By regulating the optical arrangement, professional line lasers can be focused if required. As a rule, the brightness and detectability of the line decreases towards the end of the extension in length.
Now that the production of laser beams has had little mystery behind it for decades, the use of line lasers, cross lasers and other positioning lasers has expanded from professional applications to the DIY market. Do-it-yourselfers use line lasers, cross lasers or cross line lasers or even circle positioning lasers to assemble furniture, wallpaper or perform other renovation work. Much like in the woodworking industry, line lasers are also used to saw straight or line up drill holes precisely. In most cases, lasers for home use are powered by rechargeable batteries so that the power cord does not interfere with the work. Small pendulum constructions ensure an accuracy in the range of +/- 4°.
