3D Projection in
Production and Assembly
3D projection of edges, boreholes, or outlines has become standard practice in many industrial and craft sectors. Instead of producing physical templates, the ProDirector 7 from SL Laser projects the required patterns directly onto workpieces or worktables.
At the push of a button, the system advances to the next layer, allowing workflows to continue quickly and accurately. Time savings of 25% or more are typical. High precision improves both product quality and process reliability.
Manual measurements and drawing transfers are no longer needed. Even quality management tasks can be visualized efficiently. Projections can be repeated and verified step by step, simplifying inspection processes significantly.

Software-Controlled
Laser Projection
The required CAD data is converted via software and transmitted to the laser projector. The projected templates are precise and completely safe for the eyes. Accurate calibration of the work surface and correct projector positioning are essential. Movable tables can be quickly aligned using reference points.
In large-scale systems or aircraft manufacturing, multiple projectors are often linked together. On request, SL Laser projectors can be integrated directly into machine controls, enabling centralized operation of all functions.
SL Laser provides industry-specific software packages that include CAD conversion, libraries for recurring components, and preconfigured routines for common industrial processes.
3D Projection in
Industry and Craftsmanship

3D projection significantly enhances process reliability. With an accuracy of ±0.35 mm, even complex components like helicopter cockpit elements can be assembled with perfect precision. Depending on the environment, projection can be displayed in green or red. Many companies additionally use mobile systems where the laser projector moves along a ceiling rail to reach different positions. Stored positions ensure smooth transitions between production steps.
The use of 3D CAD data represents the next level of process integration. For complex components or prototypes, 3D models serve as the projection basis, clearly visualizing shapes and layer structures. Typical applications include carbon fiber parts, composite materials, and components with complex geometries. Often, several projectors are used simultaneously to display multiple layers in parallel – as a multi-form projection.
For these tasks, SL Laser offers the SL3D software. It imports common CAD formats such as STEP, IGES, DXF, or XML and displays them in a 3D graphical view. Up to four projection windows can be shown simultaneously. Supplementary PDF or JPG files can also be displayed.
For multilayer processes, SL3D automatically selects the appropriate projector. Especially in aircraft manufacturing, 3D projection replaces numerous manual measuring and assembly steps. It also plays a key role in quality assurance. Positions for rivets, screws, or fasteners are highlighted and systematically checked – saving time and significantly reducing errors.
Installation and training
for 3D projection
Implementing 3D projection requires precise setup and coordinated workflows. SL Laser offers a dedicated training program, continuously refined and available both on-site and online. Each session is tailored to the customer’s specific requirements.
Unnecessary theory is avoided – practical application takes center stage. Systems are quickly integrated into existing workflows. SL Laser’s long-standing collaboration with users has contributed greatly to the technology’s reliability and wide acceptance.
In development, software, and training, SL Laser places strong emphasis on process compatibility – the foundation for its global success and high customer satisfaction.
